For over 3,500 years, the fires of Manikarnika Ghat have burned without interruption — a sacred flame that Hindus believe has never been extinguished since the age of the gods.
According to the Puranas, Lord Vishnu dug the Chakra-kund (sacred pool) here. When Goddess Sati's earring — Manikarnika — fell into the kund, the ghat received its eternal name. Lord Shiva declared it the holiest ground on earth.
Lord Shiva himself whispers the Taraka Mantra into the ear of every soul cremated here — ensuring their liberation (Moksha) beyond the cycle of birth and death, regardless of their deeds in life.
The cremation fire has been burning since the age of the Mahabharata. Generations of Dom families — hereditary keepers of the sacred fire — have maintained this flame. Every pyre is lit from this single, undying source.

At the heart of our emblem lies a shatkona — two interlocking triangles representing the eternal union of Shiva and Shakti, consciousness and creation. Within it rests the panchakshara mantra, Om Namah Shivaya, the five-syllable salutation to Lord Shiva that has echoed through this city since before memory.
Around it unfolds the Kashi Mandala — the sacred circular geography traced by pilgrims on the ancient Panchakroshi Yatra, marking the boundary of this holy city with its temples, ghats, and the ever-flowing Ganga. The tridents (trishul) at its edges recall the belief that all of Kashi rests upon Shiva's own trident.

Not only are the walks insightful, but you feel like you're walking through the city with a long and trusted friend you haven't seen in a while. Not only was Shubham able to recommend me cafes, and places to eat - but was able to make great suggestions based on the weather, the time of year and took us to places where there were little to no tourists. He was able to survive my barrage of questions and gave us insights into the history, the people, the culture and way of living in Varanasi. Sitting in front of a Kali temple, we sat cross-legged eagerly listening to the stories of the goddess like a child sitting at a camp fire. Highly recommend if you're looking for a tour that feels like a friend giving you a walk of his home city.
